Last day of #marchmeetthemaker, this month has sure gone fast. This last post is about something I’ve made being used in real life. Though it’s not quite being used in real life as such, this is Jess and her first meeting with the prototype of the puppet I’m making her. It’s for her fantastic new show she’s making. It’s very much in the beginning stages and has a lot of engineering still to do but a basic first construction has been met with approval. Phewf! Keep posted for new developments! #marchmeetthemaker2019 #lastday #puppetmaking #making #bluepuppet #puppet #newproject #fleece #muppet #plastazote #foam #theatre #newshow @jessica_innes_ @surgescotland via Instagram https://ift.tt/2FEzKWR

That’s another easy one. My parents have always supported me - emotionally, physically, financially - all through my life and still do. I wouldn’t be doing what I do now without them but I know how lucky I am. I wrote before about how my dad taught me so much about making things growing up but it was my mum who helped me emotionally through bad times, good times and everything in between. I can never thank them enough for being there for me. Though my dad is gone I still hear him giving me advice.
My mum is well into her retirement now and has had an obsession with quilting. She’s currently doing a City and Guilds course in textiles, just for hell of it. Never stop learning! There’s quite a cross over with textile props and we constantly talk about methods and materials so Mum has now taken over the mantle of being making advice provider; though we share a lot of knowledge now too. I really don’t know where I’d be without her. #marchmeetthemaker2019 #support #parents #makingitpossible #workinginthearts #textileprops#quilting #proud #making #lucky #pigsticks #pigsticksp #pigsticksproductions #jenkilgour via Instagram https://ift.tt/2U4J54d
Well that’s easy...all of them!! Though that also means they were equally easy. Hmmm.
. Each project has its own challenges and fun (easy) bits. The more I do, the more things I get to grips with and it becomes a little easier the next time....if only I made the same thing all the time. Ach, who wants that?? That’s boring. Maybe a little less stressful though. Yeah, that’s something on my to-do list. Make something I already know how to make, start to finish. I have actually been thinking I need to think of a thing. A thing to make. A thing to make and sell. Something. ...... Any suggestions gratefully received. Who wants something made, that they would buy, that I could make?....answers on a postcard please....(one for the older listeners out there)....or you could just post on here...yeah that would be easier. I’ll make my millions yet!! #marchmeetthemaker2019 #mostdifficultmake #trytryagain #puppetmaking #propmaking #making #needtospecialise #learning #newthings #gettingbetter #pigsticks #pigsticksproductions #pigsticksp #jenkilgour via Instagram https://ift.tt/2FAIVHU Don’t use packaging, except a bit of bubble wrap on occasion but it got me thinking I should brand my stuff somehow. The Touring Network box is going back on the road next week and I’ve realised I haven’t signed it as it were. I’m thinking I should do a stamp or a sticker or something. What do people think of the pic of painting Pigsticks? Could be a thing? #marchmeetthemaker2019 #branding #packaging #stamp #sticker #paintingpigsticks #pigsticks #pigsticksproductions #pigsticksp #jenkilgour via Instagram https://ift.tt/2FKnXrd Today’s prompt is ‘anything goes’, as in, whatever you want to post. This then gave me the dilemma of what to post! So after much thinking about it, I decided to write about my special time management skills. I’m loving my new workshop space and I’ve been enjoying pottering and experimenting with stuff. Fortunately I’m adaptable with working hours. I can get up and get going when I need to and keep going until the job is done but left to my own devices, I’m definitely more of a night owl. Often it takes me all morning to get my head into gear and then I end up working on, only realising it’s getting late when it starts getting dark outside. This evening I started making a little Sculpey blob close to 7pm and thought, hmmm, better not get carried away or I’ll be staying there all night. To be honest I wouldn’t really mind but you do need to step away. Stay tuned to find out what the blob turns into... #marchmeetthemaker2019 #sculpey #anythinggoes #timemanagement #workinglate #gettingthejobdone #pottering #pigsticks #pigsticksp #pigsticksproductions #jenkilgour via Instagram https://ift.tt/2CIeezJ I should probably do more self care. I have my moments of being physically and mentally fit. I’m generally robust with both and I know about all the things we should do to keep ourselves fighting fit but don’t always do it. My self care comes when I’m in the zone of cooking good food. If you feel good on the inside you feel good on the outside. That’s the theory anyway. . #marchmeetthemaker2019 #selfcare #goodfood #healthyinsideandout via Instagram https://ift.tt/2OtNasy
As I use countless different types of materials and techniques, it’s difficult to narrow down to one thing but for today, I’ve picked one brilliant way (out of many) of making patterns. A while ago I was trawling through the many amazing tutorials on YouTube and found @evilted_channel and his nifty technique for pattern making using tinfoil and gaffa tape. See the urls at the end of this post for his dome pattern making vid and more of my favourite folk. Don’t know if it’s his invention but it works incredibly well. There are so many awesome people who give their time and expertise to help folk learn the basics for cosplay, mask making, puppet making and prop making as well as carpentry, mould making, welding, sewing and...well, anything else you could possibly think of. A small portion of my other favourite go-tos are below. I hope it’s helpful to someone.... Evil Ted Smith: https://www.youtube.com/user/evilted40. I’ve always had pretty good feedback from folk who experience my work. Whether it’s making a one off, making my own projects or working with others in a joint project. It does indeed warm the cockles and make the heart sing when you get praise for what you do. Baby had many reactions from the general public; hilarity, fear, disgust, shock, tears, barking...the odd swear word!...but mostly laughter. On the whole though it’s been pretty good. Solas Festival gave us a quote saying it was the “most nightmarish” thing there. I always take that as a compliment. Mission accomplished. Keep an eye out for next year, Baby may return to a festival near you! #marchmeetthemaker2019 #puppetmaker #propmaker #walkabout #walkaboutperformance #outdoortheatre #streettheatre #streetarts #outdoorarts #glasgow #surgefestival #merchantcityfestival #merchantcityfestival2018 #surgefestival2018 #mothersruin #baby #puppet #demonbaby #amfaepaisley #neillritchie #pigsticksproductions #pigsticksp #pigsticks #jenkilgour@neillritchie @surgescotland@jessica_innes_ @merchantcityfestival via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BvZq5fBn0zm/ Hmmm... this is my thinking face....still thinking... 1. Keep doing it no matter what. If you don’t, it’s not for you. 2. Keep speaking to people. Everyone thinks you’re going to steal their job/ideas/reputation. They don’t owe you work/advice/attention but keep asking them anyway. 3. Don’t expect anything but aim for everything. 4. Be nice but not a doormat. 5. Practice, practice, practice. #marchmeetthemaker2019 #thinkingface #toptips #advice #making #maker #propmaking #workinginthearts #dontlistentomeiknownothingaboutit #howwouldyoudoit via Instagram https://ift.tt/2WeyobO I’ve just finished off upholstering a new seat pad for the foot stool that goes with my dad’s recliner. I’ve snaffled it for the workshop. Even with his amazing abilities to make stuff, my dad also had a habit of destroying things in an attempt make other things work better. I’m sure I haven’t inherited that particular trait...ahem...carry on... He took off the original seat pad to attach it to an exercise rowing machine or something but it was too slidey and we now don’t know where it is. Could be in bits or attached to something else for all we know. The legs however survived and so with a bit of MDF, some scrap material and foam, my trusty staple gun and a beginner’s upholstery book from 1983, I put together this rather lush pad. Far from perfect but not bad for a first go at upholstery, does the job. My mum is going to get me to recover her dining chairs so a good practice run. What I’m proud of is myself. A little self-congratulatory perhaps but if I’m not proud of what I’ve achieved in my life, who the hell else is going to? Though I know that both my mum and dad would always have said they were proud of me and that means the world. I’m a very lucky girl. I'm proud that I have done so many interesting things, met so many wonderful people and been to so many fantastic places. Not that it’s going to stop. I feel I can turn my hand to making most things, usually always new things where I don’t really know what I’m doing but I’ll always have a blooming good try. So impressed was my friend Chris of my non-plumbed water dispensing system that he said he would definitely team up with me for the impending zombie apocalypse. I’m not sure how good I would be trying to fight off the zombie hoardes armed with only a severed limb, never having done it before but as I said, I’d give it a jolly good go. #marchmeetthemaker2019 #proudof #proud #upholstery #making #mending #makingoldnew #footstool #zombieapocalypse #severedlimbsasweapon #tryingnewthings #givingitago #pigsticks #pigsticksproductions #pigsticksp #jenkilgour via Instagram https://ift.tt/2Yf1Xfu |
