 Check out the smoothnicity of these babies. Making dragon toenails. This is actually the second batch because the client said they needed to be flatter. The client (being my mum!) is always right. They are going to be cast in clear resin with a wee bit of goldyness and some blue. We'll see how it goes. It's for her quilt she's making which looks pretty awesome with a big ol' dragon on the front. We thought that shiny toenails would look cool and it also means I have something else to experiment with. This is Apoxie Sculpt. I was wanting to see how smooth I could get the surface and went all the way up to 2000 grit wet n dry sandpaper then a wee polish with my Dremel felty polishing wheel. It got pretty smooth but I wanted jewel-like. So my solution that may or may not make a difference is adding a shiny coat of gloss spray lacquer. Let's see if it works.  Yey! Got my first successful pull of the body and the head of this weird wee guy. Not my sculpture but I got tasked with making a mould for him. His head and body are separate and the head in particular was a bit of a challenge as it's hollow like a bell with long dangling sticking out ears and nose and no flat surface. I wondered how on Earth I was going to do it but I do love to rise to a challenge. After much trial and error I got a good (whole!) cast with a one part mould and injecting a liquid casting material. I'm feeling I want to try one more time in a slightly different way as there are benefits and disadvantages to the two ways I've already experimented with.The body was done as a brush on mould, though its challenge was the mouth cavity with tongue. Undercuts! But it seems to have worked and I got a perfect cast in plaster. . Interesting and weird chemical reaction...see the one in the front left, it's pretty much the colour of the stinky old blackened resin I was experimenting with and just trying to use up (fingers crossed it still cures). I put in some blue glow in the dark pigment just for fun and because I had some. Normally, when fresh, this resin would be a light amber colour. See all the other ones...they are all from the same batch of resin but I added yellow glow in the dark pigment and it seems to have returned it to its original colour!!! (except a bit glowy) Why? I've no idea. La Sumera is Catalonian for female donkey and L'Unicorn is well...unicorn as you may have guessed. Accidentally didn't read the instructions of this new resin properly. In my defence, the 2 part bottles are the same size so I assumed it was 1:1 ratio.
