Operation Upgrade Workshop in full swing. Adapting an IKEA note rack, found in the clearance shelf, to make a grid hanger for my hand tools is working nicely. And just look at all those tape measures in their place. Will they stay there in full view? That will be a question for future Jen.

Does anyone else have this specific problem? I have at least 4 tape measures and I’ve just spent the last 5 minutes looking for any one of them, having used one a mere five minutes previously. At the moment, I now have eyes on only one of them - a different one to the one I was using before of course. Where do they go???? I’ll admit I’m not the most tidiest of workers when in the full throes but Jeezo!! I thought of getting a tool belt once upon a time but thought better of it as I’d just catch it on things. And pencils disappear too!!

The last The Rig prop I made is the soft version of the satellite phone featured in episode one. They needed a rubberised one as it was going to be dropped by Iain Glen and they didn’t want the real one potentially broken if thrown about the place. So the one on the left is a rubber/resin mix and a soft rubber flexible, screw-in antenna. Was very pleased with the outcome.😃🤙📞 Another particularly interesting challenge with re-creating the small screen. After a few experiments with clear resin, I think it turned out quite good.

Watched all The Rig and sadly these soft action cue balls must be gathering dust on the cutting room floor, however, they will see the light of day here. Next The Rig prop make was these little guys. What are they? They are “amalgam” fillings. Not sure if they actually used these in the end but they were made anyway. The character was to spit his fillings out so they needed something the actor could put in his mouth. 
(Edit update: just watched the 2nd episode and they did use them! Just sitting in a bloody soap dish along with the gold one the actor actually spat out that I believe the make up artist made, but they got their own screen time. Yay!) 

After a bit of research to make them mouth friendly, including finding out my dentist didn’t do amalgam fillings anymore because of the mercury (made me think about getting my silver fillings changed until I found out how much it would cost!) so I had to think of something else. After a bit more research, I discovered toysafe pewter. Would give them a good weight when dropped too. I made a mould from some fake resin teeth, cast some new ones in plaster, drilled out some cavities, made a new foodsafe, mould, popped the plaster teeth back in the new mould, had my first go at metal casting then smashed off the plaster parts to reveal the fillings. Was a very pleasing process. 

I need to do more metal casting, it was fun. Anyone want to commission a pewter necklace or bracelet made of fillings or teeth?

What seemed like a million years but was actually only a little under 2 years ago, I was making a bunch of stuff for "The Rig" which is now finally showing on Amazon Prime. A supernatural thriller based on an oil rig in the North Sea. Lots of wheels and valves moulded and cast from an original. Painted by the onset scenics, they were to be dotted about the massive set built in the film studios in Leith docks. Sadly, I never got to see them in situ so will need to keep my eyes peeled to try and spot some on the telly. Was my first go at rotocasting, where I built my own manual rickety machine from scraps of wood. Always a challenge but always a fantastic learning process. I was really quite proud of myself. Stand by for the other things I made...
