My old faithful and extremely noisy Scheppach dust extractor blew up a little bit yesterday. Blue light flashes were witnessed coming from the motor so I surmised it didn’t look too safe to proceed. After a bit of investigation to see if it could be fixed, it was decided the motor was too far gone. Another motor could have been purchased but for the price of a second hand one, I figured I could get a whole brand new vacuum. I’ve salvaged all the useable parts of the old vac. Will do something with it! This wee Wickes own brand workshop vac was a reasonable price and though it’s much smaller, the size really does suit my workshop better and it is an awful lot quieter. We shall see how much it stands up to my abuse. It even has a blower option! 😃👍 Of course, the inevitable and immediate personalisation with decals and puppet eyes were a must.

Been having fun with wood lately. No smutty jokes please! With my workshop upgrade, I wanted to make drawers for one of my benches but with the price of timber these days (ooft!) and my almost primal need to make stuff out of scraps, I wanted to have a go at pallet wood salvage. Having found a source of HT (heat treated - non-toxic) pallets, I thought I’d have all the wood I could possibly want. The only thing is, I don’t have a jointer or a thicknesser (planer), i.e. machines that mill uneven wood to nice flat and parallel surfaces. Hours of YouTube videos later, I had a go at resurfacing said pallet wood with my wee trim router and a DIY built router sled. Principal fairly simple. Execution somewhat varied… Regardless, upon deciding to surface just one side of each length to save the straining motor of my trim router, I plundered ahead and with only minimal gouges. As a generality, it seems to have worked. I have miraculously achieved right angles on all corners and so drawer number 1 is fitted; gliding as smoothly as Barry White on Top of the Pops. Drawer number 2 is pictured and in full clamping mode. It’s going to be rustic sheep shed style as opposed to fine furniture but I kind of like it that way anyway.
